Former President Arroyo: Duterte’s initial year is “awesome”

On a statement given last Friday, former Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA), commended President Rodrigo Duterte for his “awesome” leadership and achievements during the first year of his term as the Chief Executive of the country.

GMA, who is now Pampanga’s representative and a deputy speaker in Congress, complimented President Duterte for his good resolve on the existing crises faced by the country.

Citing Duterte’s war on drugs and intention to rebuild the country’s infrastructure, Arroyo said:

"President Rodrigo Duterte has shown awesome leadership and resolve in the many programs that he promised to do during his presidency."

"In his first year, he managed to institute various bold reforms against illegal drugs and corruption. His Build, build, build initiative is commendable and is a step in the right direction towards achieving inclusive growth," GMA added affirming that Duterte indeed, had shown prowess during the first year of his term.

Meanwhile, it can be recalled that three weeks after Duterte took office last year, Arroyo has been released from detention. The Supreme Court, moreover, had dismissed plunder charges against her over the “alleged misuse of state lottery funds.” Also, during Arroyo’s term as president, Duterte worked hand in hand with the former president as her anti-crime adviser.

It can also be cited that Duterte managed to appoint several of Arroyo's former cabinet officials to his official family. Some of whom includes: National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon, Energy Secretar Alfonso Cusi, Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jess Dureza, Solicitor General Jose Calida and Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation chairperson Andrea Domingo.
