Robredo is the sum of her opportunism while Marcos has many accomplishments, says columnist

Vice President Leni Robredo's career is the making of her mere opportunism, and unlike her opponent Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., she has no real accomplishment.

This was the gist of the column by Victor Avecilla for the Manila Standard on May 09.

"Robredo’s political career has been characterized by opportunism.  She got elected to the House of Representatives in 2013 on the fame she inherited from her late husband, a Cabinet secretary of former President Benigno Aquino III.  After Grace Poe turned down the LP offer for her to run as its vice presidential bet in the May 2016 polls, Robredo readily agreed to do so, even if it was obvious she was only the LP’s second choice. The columnist public support for the Vice President has deteriorated drastically in the past few months.

Avecilla also questioned the victory of the VP in the May 2016 elections, noting how it was suspicious how her opponent, Marcos, was winning by over million votes but his lead was "slowly but systematically trimmed".

Robredo was the Liberal Party Vice Presidential candidate. The party's "headquarters" was tha Novotel Hotel at the Araneta Center in Cubao, as it is owned by the family of LP presidential bet Mar Roxas.

Days before the election day, foreign executives of Smartmatic, the company that produced the election voting machines, were housed in Novotel.

It was reported that several Smartmatic machines were seen at the hotel on election day.

Allegedly, a Smartmatic official altered the program without Comelec's permission. After the incident, Robredo was winning over Marcos.

Thus Marcos filed an electoral protest at the Presidential Electoral Tribunal. Robredo claiming that Marcos was the one who cheated, filed a counter protest.

Despite her contradictions, Robredo was asked to pay eight million to PET, an amount her relatives came up with for her.

"The Robredo campaign strategy for the vice presidency highlighted her having worn slippers like her husband did, and her having ridden an air-conditioned bus to Bicol," he said.

"Taking advantage of the defeat of the LP presidential candidate, Robredo ordained herself as the leader of the political opposition," he added.

He also said that Robredo's strategy of bringing up the Marcos ill-gotten wealth did not work, as proven by the millions of votes he has received.

"Robredo’s frequent reference to the so-called ill-gotten wealth of the Marcos family is not only irritatingly repetitious; it underscores her manifest inability to discuss and fathom other social and political issues."

The columnist added that Robredo might be unaware that her campaign bogeyman about the Marcos wealth was only effective during the 1986. People now have learned of the corruption of the Aquino's and the Liberal Party.

"Marcos had many accomplishments as a senator.  His greatest achievement was his having almost single-handedly stopped the passage of the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (endorsed by President Aquino III) which would have dismembered the Republic of the Philippines," he said.

"What has Robredo accomplished as a member of the Congress or as vice president?" he further wrote.
