Impeachment complaint vs Duterte trashed by Congress

Lawmakers from Congress on Monday found the impeachment complaint filed by Magdalo Rep Gary Alejano against President Rodrigo Duterte as lacking substance and should not proceed to further probing.

The Committe unanymously voted to dismiss the complaint.

Alejano filed the complaint on the grounds that Duterte betrayed public trust and ordered the killing of thousands of drug addicts, and pushers.

His inability to defend the rights of the country against China regarding the disputed West Philippine Sea was also one of the reasons Alejano gave.

The panel's decision was weighed heavily on Alejano's confession that he had not personally witnessed the killings he accused the President of.

Aggravated by the decision, Alejano said that the panel was unwilling to hear him,  and simply voted based on Duterte's popularity.

"I assure you if we allow the president that kind of power in violation of the constitution ... If we allow it further, it will be a dictatorship," he told reporters.

"We are sending the message to the president, 'yes, you continue, we will allow you'." he added.

Meanwhile, Presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo said the junking of Alejano's complaint was expected as it was built on falsehoods and intended to ruin the President's reputation.

Several committee members shared the opinion, saying the complaint was deeply flawed.

Harry Roque said "at best it's a misrepresentation, at worst it's a falsity", while Deputy house speaker Fredenil Castro said Alejano was using "hearsay" to try to oust a popular president.
